UK PM Johnson Rejects Opening Borders to Ukraine Refugees

INTERNATIONAL: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has rejected calls on Monday, March 7, for Britain to ease visa-demands on Ukrainian refugees fleeing conflict as he met with his Canadian and Dutch counterparts in London to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

"What we won't do is have a system where people can come into the UK without any checks or any controls at all, I don't think that is the right approach, but what we will do is have a system that is very, very generous," he has told reporters.

Johnson has spoken before holding a trilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at Royal Air Force station RAF Northolt in London.

He has also held separate bilateral meetings with the Canadian and Dutch prime ministers.

Russia's actions have been condemned around the world, sent more than 1.5 million Ukrainians fleeing abroad, and have triggered sweeping sanctions that have isolated Russia to a degree never before experienced by such a large economy.

Russia denies deliberately targeting civilians. It calls the campaign it launched on February 24 a "special military operation" to disarm Ukraine and remove leaders it calls neo-Nazis. Ukraine and its Western allies call this a transparent pretext for an invasion to conquer a nation of 44 million people.
